Fundations
Wilson Language Basics
Fundation Skills
1. Letter Formation
Letters are practiced with sky writing. Students use their extended arm to correctly form letters in the "sky". Students then establish good writing habits. This includes pencil grip and writing position. They should write with chairs pulled in and feet on the floor. The "free hand" should be holding the paper.
2. Phonological Awareness
Students begin to understand that:
a spoken sentence consists of separate words
a word consists of separate syllables
a syllable constists of separate sounds
3. Sound Mastery
Students will learn a keyword to help remember the sound of each letter. Please refer to the Fundations keyword page to learn each keyword for the letters of the alphabet.
4. Phonics
Students will begin how to blend sounds into words. They will use finger-tapping to help with this process.
5. Vocabulary
Students develop vocabulary from reading aloud and classroom discussions. We also have Kindergarten sight words, which you can find on our Kindergarten Sight Word page.
6. Fluency
Students do both Echo stories (with our friend Echo the owl) and choral reading of stories to help develop fluency,
or the quick and automatic recognition of words.
7. Comprehension
Students develop comprehension through listening. Oral stories are acted out with Echo and baby Echo puppets.
