Reading and Writing Groups
Children rotate to three activities one day and three different reading/writing activities the next
day. They follow the schedule on their activity boards. The six centers include:
1. Journal Center: children write a sentence in their journals using a sentence starter provided and illustrate using
at least three colors. They check for proper punctuation and
capitalization.
2. Listening Center: children listen to a story on tape using headphones, when finished
they complete a book response worksheet.
3. Computer Center: children work on the computer program, "Waterford"
4. ABC Center: children work on alphabet puzzles, beginning sound puzzles, building word
activities, cut and paste phonics worksheets etc...
5. Pocket Chart Center: children work on beginning sound, alphabetical order, sequencing,
word building and sentence building
6. Guided Reading Groups: Children work with the teacher on reading skills. They read books
together and focus on tapping out sounds in words, sight word vocabulary, and
comprehension.
7. SMARTboard Center: children use the SMARTboard and participate in literacy
games, phonics activities, and story sequencing.
